Library to Empower Communal Harmony

Be Educated Opened a Library in Village of Kamesh on Nov 28th 2011

Story of Kamlesh: It is a story of a child of age six, named Kamlesh, a Dalit girl, a simple, sweet and untroubled, any other morning she woke up and innocently  walked through the piece of land owned by a upper caste community. She was threaten and warned not to pass through that land earlier, but six year child did not take that as serious, This was all her fault. Seeing her going thru the passage two-three people walked towards her, grabbed her by her fragile little arms, and before she could understand she was tossed into burning fire, she felt the sharp fire burning her skin down, she cried and called out for help but no one came to her rescue. Just few minutes into this howling and screaming, her pregnant mother somehow managed to pull her daughter out of the fire after a long struggle. Kamlesh suffered more than 80% burns and was at the brink of death.

Three years later, her right hand is a piece of dead rubber having lost mobility and function. Her left hand and right leg burnt severely and she suffer from searing pain. The scars inside her are as fearsome and permanent. A tender, innocent life has been violated and nipped in the bud.

Justice was not only delayed but denied and subverted. It was made to serve the perpetrators! No fair investigation and no protection for the witnesses meant case would fall apart and justice would not be served. Poverty and illiteracy of Kamlesh parents also played role receiving justice. After that Mr. Madhu Chandra who is a social activist and research scholar at New Delhi came up to help the Dalit girl. Presently she is taken care of by a Delhi based NGO called ‘Pratigya’ and she is in third standard, besides getting tuition classes. Mr. Chandra is trying to give her better life in his limited resource and capacity.

Be Educated Initiation: Be Educated team discussed with local community to analyze the situation of atrocity on a poor child, concluded that the poverty and illiteracy make some people feel proud especially among the old generation. New generation is not sure and but has a sense not to support this bad tradition. Be Educated has decided to open a Library in that village in a house of Dalit community, which will attract children from all communities to become member and encourage them to use the facility. When everyone shares the same resource, meet and socialize shall change the entire dynamics and bring social harmony and respect for one another.

Be Educated has decided to dedicate this library to Kamlesh, the victim child. On other hand Be Educated is also serious about the future of Kamlesh, would like Kamlesh to get the best education to secure her a better future. Team is working with Mr. Chandra, a social worker and her care taker towards making a blue print for her future including her education, her treatment and recovery from her mental trauma she had gone through. Be Educated team contacted with her father Saundth Singh and providing him help and guidance for the education of their other children, their education has been completely been jeopardizes after the incident.

Be Educated Library changed my life

Success story of a Girl from Pakistan Be Educated Library

The story is about a girl named Faiza Jabeen, a student of 9th grade. She lives in Naukot of Sindh Province in Pakistan. Her father is a shopkeeper (auto parts shop) by profession and mother is a housewife. They live their life with difficulties and they hardly earn enough money to spend in their daily life. In this story we would like to throw some lights on a brilliant student who regularly used our library facilities and got benefitted. When I spoke with her she shared her experience. She said “I am studying in a very respectable school of my city, ‘Ideal Public School’. But before discussing my success story I want to share my ideas about success”.

When I was younger, I thought success was something different. I thought when I grow up, I want to be famous, I want to be a star, I want to see the world, I want to study in the best Educational Institution.  But today my idea of success is quite different. For me now the most important thing in life is to live my life with integrity and not to give into peer pressure. To live your life as an honest person and contribute in some way or other; these things are important and necessary if you are a student.

When I was in primary school, my learning progress was not as good as compared to what it is now, because there were not many books for me to study. When I joined junior high school, I was fortunate enough to become a member of “Be Educated Movement” Library and it was the first step towards a new life! There are lot of books on various topics and not only the ones related to our syllabus but also a lot for reading during your leisure time. After joining the “Be-Educated” library my academic progress has improved day by day. My test score was just 70% when I was in class 7th and it further improved up to 85% in class 8th and I strongly hope that it will be much better in the later years as well. Now I can say that success in education requires discipline, sincerity and hard work, but only if you are not frightened by these things, the opportunities are much better now than they have ever been before”. I am very thankful to Be Educated, it provided us a better environment to study and progress further in life and now I have advised my friends to join as well so that they might  also have a bright future, just like me.
